ELEVATION NORTH has NEWS for YOU!

“NO MORE HURTING PEOPLE.  PEACE.”  Words on a poster – written in bright colors by a small eight year old boy, Martin.  He thought about what he would put on his poster for his class project, and choosing to write what seemed most important to him, he shaped his letters the best he could, colored them in, and then held it up for a picture.  Words that now echo around the world as his young face graces the photo – what better message could he give to the watching world now that his all-too-short life has been snuffed out by those who didn’t care if they hurt people or not.  All he was doing was enjoying a really special event, standing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon early this week, waiting with his mom and his sister … to see his dad cross the finish line.  That shouldn’t be considered a punishable offense, nor should it have provoked fear for his very life.  Standing on American soil in a renowned old city on none other than Patriot’s Day, he was experiencing a memorable time with his family that someday he would be proud to tell his own children about!  “Kids, I just have to tell you how it felt to be standing right there – right at the edge of the finish line when your grampa took that last magical step over!  I was little, but I was oh, so proud of him!  I will never forget – you just had to be there.  It’s hard to describe, but that image will forever be etched in my mind! Look at these old digital pictures in my outdated computer files!  See what your grampa looked like when he finished that amazing run?”  Well, those words will never be spoken.  Martin’s future that may have included a wife and children to share memories with – will never be.  Someone filled with evil took it away without permission, without so much as a warning.  Suddenly everything changed for this family and for so many other families … for our entire nation.  We grieve for those lives taken, we grieve with their loved ones.  We hurt with those who have been hurt, injured, maimed – not only physically but emotionally.  Their lives will never, ever be the same.  Something huge – rises up within us like a righteous crescendo of anger filled with a million unanswered questions of “why, why, why?”  We want to storm the hearts and minds of the one or more responsible and demand reasons that would never satisfy – but we would like to force their eyes to look into the eyes of that little boy and now the eyes of his broken dad and mom and sister.  But would their sin-filled souls allow them to truly see the horror of their deeds?  This is “me” talking, not Jesus, as you can tell.  For Christ demands something more of me.  Not hateful retaliation, though even by His rules, they must take on the penalty for taking little Martin’s life – and the lives of the other two – young women with dreams and futures and opportunities.  Yet, God offers something bigger to the perpetrators if they will ask for it:  His forgiveness.  Humanly speaking that just about takes our breath away.  Some would scream “crucify!” … “let them spend eternity in hell” … “they deserve it!”  God reminds me that I didn’t deserve His forgiveness, either.  My sins were just as repulsive to Him as those committed this week – because God hates sin.  Period.  It all comes down to somehow blending our prayers … into a cry for comfort for those who have experienced unspeakable losses – of life and limb … and into impassioned pleas to God for the unthinkable – that these who inflicted the explosive horrors of damage and death will be reached with the very love of God that there might be a turning point in our nation.  What a powerful spark to start an unprecedented revival that would be!  Just imagine demented killers being transformed by the blood of Jesus – sharing His message of healing for our our fragmented, torn, and bleeding nation!  People would fall to their knees and recognize Who they need to bow down to rather than the gods of this world who have kidnapped and killed respect for precious God-given life.  So in these days of grief with our American flags flying at half-mast, which attitude is better for our nation and world?  Pray, people, pray!  And when you are praying for Martin’s family and the others … do not forget to pray for the one or more who also need the redeeming power of Christ’s love!  If enough of us seek God’s face to change the unlovely and the hateful … one by one our world will be changed for His glory!

ELEVATION NORTH has NEWS for YOU!

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF YOURSELF AS A LEADER?  Even if you’ve never even remotely perceived yourself in this way … you can be a leader in your own right, you know.  No, you don’t necessarily need to stand behind a pulpit or a podium, or even lead a group or teach a class.  You do not have to hold an office in any organization.  It is not required that you are known as the life of the party.  You did not have to be the most popular in school – or now in your present circles.  You could have even held the title of “wallflower” – and there’s still hope for you!  How is that, you ask?  Well, let’s look at the possibilities this way.  You believe in something, right?  We all believe in something – or several things.  You believe in someone, right?  We all believe in someone – or several people we know.  Many of us believe in Someone.  Yes, that’s right – with a capital “S”.  That denotation translates into someone who we’ve had a genuine, personal experience with … meaning the God of Heaven and earth, the Lord God Almighty!  And if you ask me, personally knowing Someone like that, Someone who is above all others, Someone who loved us enough to give His very Son for our redemption, makes it pretty easy to be passionate in our belief level.  What happens when we believe in something so strongly?  What happens when we get excited about a relationship that means so much to us?  It’s hard for us to keep quiet about it, right?  We want to share about it (something) with anyone who will listen!  And we want to introduce this special person (someone) to everyone else, right?  Now translate this into your belief level in God’s present work on this earth.  Translate this concept into your present relationship with God.  You see, if your beliefs about God’s Word are passionate, and if your commitment to your relationship with Christ is solid and growing – you will sense an excitement that cannot be contained.  It has to spill out and overflow naturally – from your lips, your heart, your very lives.  And that’s where the “leader” part comes in.  I believe that anyone who lives a life completely sold out, completely in love with God … will become a natural leader as they express what is alive within their soul!  And if you don’t think that describes you, how about praying this prayer that was offered by Pastor Bill Hybels at the Global Leadership Summit some time ago?  This would be a powerful prayer to incorporate into our time spent in God’s presence as we seek His face, no matter how we have perceived ourselves in the past!  If we believe it as we pray it, it will be life-changing not only personally, but also corporately within our church!  We will be transformed into spiritual leaders in God’s Kingdom here on earth.  I invite you to pray this with me right now:

“God, this is a new day.  I freshly commit myself to the role You have invited me to play as You are building Your church in this world.  I am awestruck again today that You include me in this grand life-giving, world-transforming endeavor.  So today I joyfully offer You:  my love, my heart, my talents, my energy, my creativity, my faithfulness, my resources, and my gratitude.

I commit myself to the role You have assigned me in the building of Your church so that it may thrive in this world.  And I will bring You my best today.  You deserve it.  Your church deserves it.  It is the hope of the world.  Amen.”

Like someone else has said, “Let’s be the generation that we’ve been waiting for!”  Let’s not wait for everyone else to step up and become the leaders that God has ordained for us to be … let the leading begin – with US!  Use us, Lord … we are Yours!

ELEVATION NORTH has NEWS for YOU!

DO YOU WEAR A SIGN AROUND YOUR NECK?  If you did, what would it say?  Mary Kay Ash once said, “When you look at others, pretend there is a sign hanging around their neck that says, ’Make me feel important!’” Though those words are probably never spoken aloud, they are the unverbalized cry of our hearts as human beings.  Who do you know that doesn’t love it when someone makes them feel important?  It’s really not at all about feeling like the brand of “high-and-mighty-important” that some people exude … but rather the “I-want-to-know-that-I-am-valued” brand of feeling important.  God created us with a built-in longing to be valued and loved and affirmed!  One of the greatest ways we can allow God to use us as His children is to accept people right where they are at, coming alongside them with a genuine love that reaches out to embrace them.  Loving them right where they are at – but loving them beyond that point to their full potential in Christ!  It’s the unconditional love that will cut through the built up hurts and closed off hearts from years of put-downs and being judged and scorned.  It’s the actions behind our words that will speak the most profoundly in how we relate to people.  But it’s the words they hear first … whether words of affirmation, or words that belittle and brand them in negative ways.  It’s our words that will feel to them like an open invitation to experience something more, something totally life-changing.  Or our words can knock-down, knock-out any tiny intentions they may have had to seek out this “God-life” a bit further.  You see what power God places in our mouths?  Our words are pretty much the tell-tale sign, the dead give-away of what is inside of us.  We tend to spew out judgmental, hurtful, destructive verdicts rather than speaking Christ-like words of passion that will build others up and gift them with acceptance and the belief that there is something that God has placed within them just waiting to burst forth and be nurtured and trained.  Our God is the Redeemer, we are the recruiters to get them to the place where God can speak to them, change them, deliver them, and empower them to live a victorious, new life!  A brand new start … a new beginning!  Old things begin to fall away and a new creation begins to peek through and be revealed for the world to see.  The transformation is amazing, simply amazing!  And the best part of it is – is that our words can be the turning point in someone else’s life.  When they have no self-worth, we get to come alongside and show them our belief in them.  When they hold back because they think they are not good enough, here we come and let them know that they definitely are.  Not in themselves, of course, but through Christ.  Just like us … we are not good enough, either, except through the saving, transforming power of Jesus Christ!  We have a common bond!  That’s where they begin to see that we are real – not lording our goodness or righteousness over them – but relating to them that we still remember that we are just “sinners saved by grace”.  Together, we can embark on a joint venture of this new place in Christ, growing together into the exciting destiny that God has planned for us!  Relationships with other people is an opportunity to not just share the Jesus we know – but to respond to them in a way that will open the door so they will even listen to our words about Him – for starters.  They see US first, you know.  And often they judge our God by what they see in us, leading them to either accept Him or reject Him.  Start looking for the invisible signs around the necks of the people who cross your path, and ask God how you can make a difference in their lives, loving them as Jesus does!  Let’s take THE CHALLENGE

ELEVATION NORTH has NEWS for YOU!

FROM ABANDONED TO ECSTATIC!  From the most unimaginable feeling of being totally forsaken … to the most unimaginable feeling of total triumph and indescribable joy.  That must be what Jesus felt.  Yes, before the cross – and every excruciating moment He hung there.  And yes, after the cross – sensing the lifeblood pulse through His veins once again and walking out of that tomb.  Leaving it empty behind Him.  Facing a world that would never, ever be the same because He arose from a death that could not keep Him.  What an amazing experience that would spill out of that joyous, victorious moment down through the ages, from century to century, and beyond time as we know it … even into Eternity!  Experiences I cannot begin to fathom, hard as I try.  My mind and my heart just cannot wrap themselves around such excruciating and such ecstatic emotions.  The span is so extreme from one to the other.  Try as I might, it’s impossible to comprehend a love that would willingly take on the pain and suffering that He did – for me.  What did He see in me that would cause Him to submit to such horrific sorrow and pain?  In moments of doubt and questions, I can’t help but understand that there must be something of priceless value in me that would compel Him to give His very lifeblood to rescue me and save me!  Hosanna!  Hallelujah!  What I can grasp is that He would not have wasted His very life.  He knew that giving it for me … and for you, was worth every drop of blood.  My mind begins to spin again with a million “whys” and “whats” – just what did You see in us that would make you bear the beating, carry the cross, stumble up the hill, endure the humiliation, let the soldiers nail You to that splintered cross, sweat drops of blood, and breathe Your last breath?  Why?  What for?  I know You knew that we could never be good enough or get it right enough times to pay for a ticket to heaven.  Suddenly I catch a glimpse of that sparkle in Your beautiful eyes that looked on a redeemed mankind as you walked out of that grave on that third day.  Your eyes are creasing wider as a smile breaks forth on Your face … for you see the Hope you have brought to us!  And there’s no feeling like that of saving Your children and knowing that Your life would bring us the Gift of all gifts – a life with You forever in our heavenly home!   You must have shone with an almost-blinding radiance as You exited that place of cold and darkness … knowing that death no longer held any power over You, or over us as Your children, for that matter!  Did You skip down the garden path with a heart of celebration and praise to Your Father?  Your sacrifice was complete and heaven resounded with a multitude of angels singing a new song of victory that could not be debuted before this moment in time!  You peered into the future and saw us celebrating, too!  You saw that we finally get it … we live because You live.  We win because You won the battle over sin and sickness and death.  We can be victorious because You’ve already taken on Satan – and came out of hell victorious.  We will never be alone – because You’ve already spent time in that state of being forsaken so we wouldn’t have to.  The joys of that first Resurrection Sunday morning are ours on this Resurrection morn if we will accept them, experience them, and share in the ecstasy that our Lord is Risen!  He is Risen, indeed!  Walk with Him, your hand in His nail-scarred hand.  Walk in celebration and gratitude and victory.  Redemption is ours!

ELEVATION NORTH has NEWS for YOU!

SOME THINGS ARE JUST HARD TO PUT INTO WORDS!  I’m sitting here tonight excited about our upcoming Good Friday evening Passover Meal that we will experience together at the church.  It will be a “first” for Elevation North, though on a smaller scale as we begin this incredible ministry event that we will plan to do each year just before Resurrection Sunday.  It is truly unforgettable, and especially when we add the production of various scenes leading up to and through the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ!  I will always remember as a young, new pastor’s wife, how my part in all of this came to be.  We were at our church in Michigan and some of the men of the church were portraying an Easter drama titled, “Is it I?”  One of the ladies of the church who was in her early seventies would make the lamb and put together the Passover foods for everyone to sample.  After several years of doing this, one year she came to me and said that it was getting too difficult for her to stand on her feet for as long as it took to prepare the lamb.  She informed me that it was time for me to learn how, and she would teach me.  As long as I have a great teacher, I can learn anything … so I agreed!  I could have never known at that point what a cherished honor this would become.  For the next twenty plus years I would marinate the lamb for hours with a special seasoning to roast in the middle of the night in preparation for the 2-3 nightly productions that a group of our church people would participate in.  It was a lot of work with little sleep, but such joyous work for the Lord, because we soon learned how very powerful this presentation was as God’s Spirit would fall upon those who were involved in portraying the biblical characters … as well as those who came to partake of the lamb and unleavened bread … and watch.  Each year we would add something more to the “Living Last Supper” - as it came to be known; another scene, a new song, more costumes sewn by one of our elderly women in the church.  Each year we would order more lamb to roast and make more unleavened bread.  The rehearsals drew the actors together in such close comradery, that on the final evening when we started taking props down, we did so, exhausted, but sad that it was over until the next year.  We would sit around and reminisce about experiences – both old and new, and it didn’t take long to sink in that putting together this huge production each year that re-enacted those scenes leading to the betrayal, the crucifixion, and ultimately, the resurrection - made a difference in so many people’s lives!  We sensed that any sacrifice being made by any of us was so worth it – not just for the present time, but for eternity!  Looking back, I can hear little children’s voices crying, “They’re hurting Jesus!”  I can still remember the emotions that people felt as they saw Jesus hanging on that cross, and the ensuing tears that streamed down their faces as they listened to the words of that powerful song, “Watch the Lamb” or “At the Foot of the Cross”.  I will never forget the one year that in between two nightly productions, I was at home folding laundry in the bedroom and suddenly I began crying as I caught a glimpse of how very meaningful and powerful this “Living Last Supper” was when it was bathed in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself!  Experiencing this changed all of us, and we always marveled that what might have been a rough-around-the-edges rehearsal, when turned into the actual production, God’s Spirit just pulled it all together in a wondrous portrayal that He definitely used for HIS glory!  We cannot wait for you to experience this year’s Living Last Supper on the Friday evening just before Easter; you will be reminded that He did it ALL for you!  And He would do it all over again if need be!  That’s how much He loves you, dear ones!  We’ll see you around the table!
